Alice (not her real name) is a 16-year-old young girl a class seven pupil, in primary school, who is one of the identified
beneficiaries of The NGAO foundation.
She lost her mother due to family disputes when she was very young, the father also abandoned her. The aunt
decided to adopt her despite herself struggling to make a living. The marital struggle forced the aunt to flee to
Nairobi. While in rural areas Alice was not taken to school. Her close relatives started abusing her sexually. The
constant verbal insults toward her coupled with sexual molestation made the aunt go back for her in the rural
areas.
Alice lives with her aunt in a single room corrugated iron sheet house in Kangemi due to unemployment life is
unbearable at times. With her age, she should be in secondary but due to all these circumstances, she delayed
starting school which killed both her morale as a girl and her self-esteem tremendously.
Due to all these issues, the NGAO foundation came to the rescue. Alice was on the edge and at risk of falling into sexual
harassment or even early marriage if not taken to school. Was accompanying the aunt any available house chores
they will get. The casual job that could put food on the table. The aunt has a child of her own therefore she vends
for both to eat and have a living.
One of the foundation’s main programs is mentorship. When alice joined NGAO she was struggling with low
self-esteem. The foundation decided to enroll her through a mentorship process where she underwent several
mentorship sessions, self-esteem being one of those sessions.
Eventually, she successfully overcame the low self-esteem issue. She opened up more about the challenges that the
family was going through while in Kangemi, these challenges included; lack of school fees, poverty, and insufficient
meals, low self-esteem. Ngao foundation facilitated the payment of her school fees, the mother was provided with
small capital for the business of selling porridge and skills in soap making.
Alice has been able to discover her talents, also she interacts with everyone confidently without feeling shy or
uncomfortable. She wants to become a doctor and also give back to the community. She does not have to worry
about food and tuition fees because The Ngao foundation has come to help out.
