Women Beadwork  Sewing  Tailoring  Electrical Project

“investing in women and girls is the most powerful way to adddress global poverty.”

Ngao Foundation is equipping/empowering vulnerable women and girls in the slums of Nairobi to be community change makers. We do this by creating environment for young girls and women overcome poverty and the despairing social misfit of slum life like rape, sexual abuse, stigma, neglect and gender-based violence. This program facilitates their self-discovery and second chance in life through women beadwork, girl-back-to-school, life skills, food, psycho-social support, business/job connections Foundation

This thematic area contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 5 (Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls) and Goal 8 (Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all ).

Women Beadwork, Sewing and Tailoring Project

Ngao Foundation has been involved in training, ensuring quality assurance and creating market linkages for the women bead products. Using the ABCD model, the individual group members brings out their natural skills which is facilitated and taken to be an asset to the individual and the entire group. Ngao supports them by training them and create market linkages for beaded items, cards, African shoes, purse, baskets, necklaces etc. This is meant to empower and support the vulnerable affected slum women in Kangemi, Kawangware and Uthiru to have a skill so that they have a way to make an income for self-sustenance. The money the women earn helps their families pay for food, medical care, school fees for their children and other basic needs. “I have bought a plot to build a house and paid university fees for my daughter through Beadwork earnings,” alludes Everlyn, a member of Beadwork team.

Girl power initiative

This initiative aims to facilitate girls from the most unfortunate families to a life changing opportunity. Most importantly, “Girl-Go-Back to School” initiative. We have supported girls to complete primary, secondary school and college/vocational training.

“When a girl is protected and empowered, her family and community thrive. When a girl’s family and community thrive, the world is changed”.

In the poorest slums of Nairobi, a girl is at risk of dropping out of school early, sexual violence, forced child marriage, early pregnancy, complications during childbirth, and contracting HIV/AIDS. If she survives, she will raise her children in poverty and they, too, will face the same obstacles. Girls have the potential to move themselves and their families into a healthier and more secure life. Ngao Foundation firmly believes that investing in the empowerment of girls means supporting the most powerful force for change on the planet.

What we do!

▪ Mentorship, leadership and life skills training for the girls to know themselves, what they want to do in

their lives and for the society and how to get there. They reflect on their values, skills and abilities.

▪ Girl-Go-Back to School initiative; We call upon friends and well-wishers to donate and sponsor a girl to

complete school. This could be primary level, secondary, college or vocational training.

▪ Career Skills Development and connections for job opportunities and support to start-up small businesses.
